About me

Please read below to learn a little more about me, my background, and what has inspired my passion for the Lake District. From my career in national park management to my personal love for outdoor adventures, I hope this gives you a sense of who I am and why I’m excited to share this beautiful landscape with you.

With over 30 years of experience in the public sector and a lifelong passion for the outdoors, I’ve had the privilege of working at the heart of the UK’s most iconic natural landscapes. As Chief Executive of the Lake District National Park for 17 years and Regional Director at Natural England before that, I’ve contributed to shaping the management and conservation of some of the UK’s most treasured landscapes. My career has also included a spell on the board of the Environment Agency and I've just joined the National Trust's Regional Advisory Group for the north, an organisation I've worked in close partnership with over the years.

The Lake District has always been more than just a place to work, it’s my playground for adventure. Whether I’m trail running, hiking, cycling, or even skiing when the conditions allow, the Lake District offers an ever-changing landscape that’s full of life and breathtaking beauty. It’s a space that fuels my passion, offers a sense of freedom, and connects me with the environment in a way that’s both nourishing and vital for my physical and mental well-being. This is why I believe so strongly that a national park is not only a space for nature but an essential place for people to spend time and have amazing experiences.

As I transition to becoming a Mountain Leader, I’m excited to share my knowledge and love of the Lake District with others. My background gives me a unique perspective, especially valuable for anyone looking for a deeper understanding of the environmental, cultural, and economic aspects of these landscapes.

This new chapter as a guide feels like a natural progression in my journey, a chance to blend my expertise and passion for the Lake District into personalised and meaningful experiences for others. I can’t wait to share the park’s beauty and adventure with you.
